Land Acknowledgement

I want to acknowledge the Indigenous peoples of this land—those who have lived here for thousands of years and continue to contribute to the rich tapestry of this community. Ashland, Oregon, is situated on the ancestral lands of the Takelma, Shasta, and Umpqua peoples. These Indigenous communities have stewarded this land for generations, cultivating a deep connection with the environment, preserving traditions, and fostering a spirit of resilience and wisdom.

We honor the history, culture, and ongoing presence of these nations. The Takelma, Shasta, and Umpqua peoples played a pivotal role in shaping the area we now call Ashland, and their stories, art, and practices continue to influence and enrich our lives today.

Today, we stand on the shoulders of their ancestors, and it is our responsibility to respect and celebrate the legacy they have entrusted to us. From their deep knowledge of the land to their powerful oral traditions, we acknowledge the wisdom they share, and we are committed to listening and learning from their voices.

As we move forward, remember the importance of inclusion, respect, and understanding. By honoring the Indigenous communities of Ashland, we not only celebrate their past but also support their present and future endeavors—whether it’s through the preservation of their cultural heritage, advocacy for their rights, or simply acknowledging their significance in our shared history.

Let’s take a moment to express our gratitude to the Takelma, Shasta, and Umpqua peoples, and all Indigenous communities, for their enduring connection to this land and their continued contributions to our community.

My journey to learn more from these peoples is in line with my quest for a deeper integration into the wisdom available to all of us in this life. I want to help foster relationships that help us integrate that wisdom as individuals and offer it to our greater wisdom culture.
